The Power of Attitude
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
No one, not you nor I can change the past. But we can play with the cards we hold at this moment and have an impact on the future. Or if you prefer a musical analogy, you can play the one string you always have – and that’s your attitude.
Something else I’ve learned though the years is that most people generally don’t have a high level of attitude awareness. They will know if they are hungry or if their feet hurt, but they usually don’t have a good handle on their attitude. Many people are keenly aware of other people’s attitude, particularly if they think it’s a bad attitude. However, most people, if you asked them, would probably think they have a good attitude. But, the more you pursue the topic, it begins to dawn on them that they rarely think about their attitude.
Helping people become aware of their attitude is so important simply because attitude is everything. It governs the way you perceive the world and the way the world perceives you.
When you are aware of your attitude and can consciously control your attitude you will begin to understand what I have come to learn. I have learned that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to what happens to me. Being aware of my attitude puts me squarely in charge of my life.
What Happens When The Unthinkable Happens?
Like so many of us, unhappy and unfortunate events happened to me in my early life that set me on a disaster course of negativity and lack of self-esteem. My mind believed and feasted on the negativity I fed it and consequently manifested inadequacies, hopelessness and despair.
Thinking I was in control, I sold myself a litany of misconceived perceptions and unrealistic expectations. This goes to show you that the ideas you entertain in your mind, affect the way your see yourself.
Choice, Chance, Change
At some point we each must arrive at the conclusion that we make choices moment to moment. Even not making a decision is a choice. One day we wake up, if we’re lucky, and realize I must make a choice, I must take a chance or my life will never change. I did it. I survived the unthinkable and I am thriving today.
Choice is something we all have. No matter if it seems we don’t have a choice, we always do. We can choose the change our inner dialogue from one of negativity, self-defeat and self-pity to one of self-encouragement and self-motivation. This is the power of attitude and it’s a power we all have. Everyone encounters hard times, hurt feelings, heartache, and physical and emotional pain. The key is to realize it’s not what happens to you that matters – it’s how you choose to respond.
It all has to start with you. Make achieving success in changing your attitude your passion. Don’t make excuses. Instead, be consistent and persevere. Be open-minded with a vision of the future. Talk about your daily successes not your perceived failures. After all failure is just an attitude. I’ve heard it said that there is no failure, only feedback. Therein lies the power of attitude!
